Mechatronics Workshop

What is Mechatronics?

Mechatronics is a trans-disciplinary field that spans the fields of mechanical, electrical, computer, and controls engineering; and computer science. Mechatronics has been identified as a unified field since at least the early 1970s. It has become prominent over the last decade with the emergence of open source and do-it-yourself (DIY) hacker and maker communities around the world and the availability of low-cost microprocessor and sensor platforms, such as Arduino, BeagleBone, and Phidgets. The low cost and ease of use of these platforms have enabled individuals and organizations to produce systems for prototyping, research, and even production at levels of sophistication that would have been unaffordable to most people a decade ago.

About the Workshop

A growing number of New Brunswick companies are already actively involved in mechatronics. NRC-IRAP has identified a need to educate more people in the New Brunswick ICT community to the potential of mechatronics.

This workshop will provide a compact overview of mechatronics through presentations from NBCC and industrial participants, an exposition of working prototypes by NBCC students and others, and an opportunity for hands-on experience in using this technology.
