Program Description

If you are compassionate and want to make a big difference in the lives of people when they’re at their worst, the Practical Nurse program is for you. You will learn how to care for people throughout their lives. The skills you develop will enable you to provide hands-on nursing care to clients in a variety of settings. Clinical practice is provided in several areas including: medicine, surgery, geriatrics, obstetrics, pediatrics, mental health and community nursing. These clinicals enable you to acquire knowledge about yourself, clients and colleagues, as well as the healthcare system in which you will strive to achieve excellence in nursing practice. Practical Nurses are committed to providing quality care that meets the needs of their clients and their families, in a spirit of respect for human dignity.

Specific Considerations

You will be asked to submit proof of a satisfactory physical examination and immunization, by following the instructions on the standardized New Brunswick Community College Medical Examination and Immunization form. In addition, various health facilities throughout the province may require the completion of their medical/immunization form and proof of valid CPR certification before clinical practicums can occur. Additional expenses may be incurred as a result of attendance at professional workshops and the annual meeting of ANBLPN. The nature of this profession requires a sincere desire to work with and help other people, at times under challenging circumstances. The individual who chooses this profession should demonstrate optimal mental and physical health and fitness, stamina and motivation. You should also respect and recognize the dignity of each individual you meet and be willing to work shifts and occasional weekends.   • To be eligible to write the licensing exam, the students must be first registered as student members of the Association of New Brunswick Licensed Practical Nurses. In addition to the registration fee, the association requires the following documentation for each incoming practical nurse student: proof of legal name - birth or baptisimal certificate, or marriage certificate or divorce decree; all academic transcripts including high school; and the results of a criminal record check.

  • The course grade required for credit against a program profile may differ for some programs due to accreditation requirements. A student may pass a course by meeting the assigned pass mark, but may not be able to apply the credit to a program certification profile that requires a higher level of achievement. For this course, the accreditation standard for Practical Nurse is 75%.
