Program Description

If you would like the ability to work anywhere and use your mechanical aptitude, the Heavy Equipment Service Technician program is for you. You learn to diagnose, repair, adjust, overhaul, maintain, operate and test mobile, heavy duty off-road equipment. As a Heavy Equipment Technician, you will possess a full range of knowledge, ability and skill that is transferrable across a number of industries. Mechanical and mathematical aptitude, an ability to communicate effectively, the ability to work with little or no supervision, function as a team player and to plan and work sequentially, are characteristics that may describe you.

As a graduate of this program, you may be employed wherever heavy equipment is sold, serviced or repaired. This includes equipment dealers, garages, railways, provincial and municipal departments, and forestry, mining, and construction companies.

Specific Considerations

Heavy equipment technicians work in the full-range of environmental conditions; from comfortable shops to remote sites where inclement weather can affect your performance. Good physical condition and agility are important because the work often requires considerable standing, bending, crawling, lifting, climbing, pulling and reaching. Students must be highly literate in the English language, both written and oral.
