Program Description

Whether you are interested in a career in law enforcement, corrections, private security or as a Paralegal or Legal Assistant, NBCC will provide you with the skills you need to succeed in this high-demand field. The Criminal Justice program is designed to develop a variety of skills you’ll need on the job, such as the various aspects of the criminal justice system and many more essential skills. Like the criminal justice field itself, this program is active and involved - you’ll learn using role-plays, video scenarios, debates and group projects.

  • high school graduation;
  • minimum average of 70% on five successfully completed Grade 12 academic courses;
  • Grade 12 academic English (or French for applicants from Francophone schools) is compulsory;
  • four remaining grade 12 academic electives must be selected from the list below.

  • Required Course: English or French ( from Francophone high school applicants; Francophone applicants may offer English as an elective)

  • Four Electives from this Group:

    Art or Music or Theatre Arts, Biology, Business Organization and Management or Introduction to Accounting or Law or World Issues, Chemistry, Communications or Journalism or Media Studies, Comparative Religion, Computer Education, Economics, Environmental Studies or Environmental Science, French (including Immersion courses), Geography, Geology, German, History, Latin, Literature (Atlantic, Black, Canadian, among others), Mathematics (Academic, Pre-Calculus, Advanced Mathematics and/or Calculus), Native Studies, Oceanography, Physics, Political Science, Sociology, Spanish.
  • In addition to the above elective courses, applicants may offer the following courses as electives: History 112: Modern History; Geography 110: Physical Geography; Mathematics 112: Functions & Relations.
Career Possibilities

As a graduate of this program you may find employment as correctional officers, youth care workers, counsellors, group-home workers, youth counsellors, rehabilitation program facilitators or law enforcement officers. Entry-level, law enforcement careers (municipal policing, RCMP) require further certification through a recognized police-training academy.

Specific Considerations

This program has a work placement component within its curriculum as a requirement for certification. Students may be required by host agencies or employers to provide a current criminal record check from a police service recognized by the host agency or employer before they may start their work placement. Individuals who have been convicted criminally and not pardoned may be prohibited from proceeding to a work placement. It is the student’s responsibility to ensure that he or she is eligible to participate. Mature applicants with related experience or training who do not meet the academic admission requirements may be considered for acceptance following additional assessment done at the college. Contact the college for further direction. You will be required to participate in physical fitness classes. Graduates of the program wishing to pursue a university degree will received two years credit towards a Bachelor of Applied Arts in Criminal Justice at St. Thomas University. Graduates are also eligible to receive 60 credits toward a Bachelor of Professional Arts - Criminal Justice at Athabasca University. The first year of the program offered at NBCC Miramichi Campus is largely in common with the Correctional Techniques, Police Foundations and Youth Care Worker programs.

Bachelor of Applied Arts in Criminal Justice graduates may apply to St. Thomas to complete a further two years of study culminating in the terminal* degree: Bachelor of Applied Arts in Criminal Justice (BAA).

*Terminal degree means those who graduate from this program with a BAA will require as much as a further full year of university study if they also wish to get a Bachelor’s Degree in another arts discipline such as history, philosophy, political science, or a Bachelor of Social Work, or a Bachelor of Education. Additionally, those who wish to apply to law school, or other graduate programs may be required to get another bachelor’s degree or do a qualifying year of study. Please check with appropriate universities for details regarding other degree requirements.
