Program Description

The Accounting Technician graduates are able to handle money, produce various financial statements, compile and prepare quarterly reports, and record and maintain accounts payable and receivables. They are prepared to maintain a complete set of accounting records leading to the preparation of financial statements including accounts receivable and payable, payroll procedures, fixed assets, accruals, account reconciliation and analysis and year-end work. They leave the program with a solid foundation in accounting and have the technical skills and knowledge required to perform an accounting-support role. All class and learning activities are designed to reinforce workplace essential skills and as such, students are required to demonstrate awareness of and efficiency in such areas as communication, technology, teamwork, environmental ethics, personal development, project and time management, workplace safety, global issues and problem solving. They must be prepared for challenging class activities, individual and team homework assignments. Graduates from the program could work in the following areas: basic tax returns; as payroll, accounts receivable, accounts payable or general accounting clerks in larger organizations; or as bookkeepers with smaller businesses.

Specific Considerations

Graduates of the Accounting Technician program are encouraged to continue their education in the Business Administration: Accounting Diploma Program which transfers to the Bachelor of Applied Management in Accountancy at UNBSJ. With experience, the graduate may become a Certified Bookkeeper through the Canadian Institute of Bookkeeping.
