Program Description

As natural gas becomes more popular in homes and industry, the booming resource needs capable hands to install it. With our one-year Gas Technician program, you’ll be on your way to becoming natural gas’ equivalent to an electrician. Are you interested in working in the field of natural gas and propane? Then our Gas Technician program may be for you. Gas Technicians are responsible for work related to the installation, operation, maintenance, inspection, and repair of systems related to the distribution or consumption of natural gas and propane. To work as a Gas Technician, you must be licensed in the field of natural gas and propane. This program will provide you with the necessary instruction to be eligible for the G2 Gas Technician certification level for appliances and equipment, up to a maximum firing rate of 400 000 BTU/h. The program follows the Fuel Safety Program: Gas Technician II curriculum of the Technical Standards and Safety Authority (TSSA).

Career Possibilities

Graduates of this program may be employed as gas technicians for a variety of employers involved with the inspection, installation, service, repair and maintenance of equipment and supplies utilized in the gas industry for the distribution or consumption of natural gas or propane.

Specific Considerations

The nature of this occupation often results in irregular working hours and on-the-job travel. It requires a mechanical/electrical aptitude, physical strength and agility needed for heavy lifting and climbing. Students are exposed to certain hazards that require the use of safety equipment. Students will be expected to purchase safety equipment including work boots, coveralls and safety glasses prior to commencement of the program. Graduates of this program that obtain 400 hrs of experience and successfully complete the New Brunswick Governments Licensing exam, will be eligible for the G2 License to work as a Gas Technician in New Brunswick.

External Certifications

Gas Technician graduates may have an opportunity to aquire the following external certifications upon meeting the external agencies certification requirements and paying any required fees to the external agency:

Information:permission to challenge the provincial licensing examination administered by the New Brunswick Department of Public Safety, Board of Examiners for Compressed Gases.

Condition
  • Licensed Gas Technician license require 2000 hours of training at an approved site and successful completion of provincial examinations as administered by the New Brunswick Department of Public Safety, Board of Examiners for Compressed Gases.

    Students registered in the NBCC Gas Technician program receive 1600 hours credit toward the G-2 certificate, and upon successful completion of the program, complete the remaining 400 hours under the direction of a licensed gas technician after provincial exams have been successfully completed.

    Individuals must successfully complete practical and written exams for all NBCC courses with a pass mark of 75% in order to receive permission to challenge the New Brunswick Department of Public Safety, Board of Examiners for Compressed Gases examinations
