FREDERICTON – (NBCC) - NBCC President and CEO Marilyn Luscombe, Chief Jesse John Simon, as well as members from Elsipogtog First Nation were on hand today to announce the Personal Support Worker: Acute Care program now being offered at the Elsipogtog First Nation.
This historic announcement marks the first time that NBCC has offered regularly-funded programming in the Elsipogtog community. Seventeen applicants have enrolled.
“NBCC is committed to delivering the best educational opportunities for our First Nations communities and we continue to encourage the integration of First Nations knowledge and culture into our post-secondary education experience,” said Luscombe. “NBCC is pushing boundaries and extending its reach to ensure all of our students gain access to college education and are successful in the workforce and in their own communities.”
“It is always encouraging to see members of our Aboriginal communities given the opportunity to train close to home,” said Lorie Leon, Provincial Aboriginal Coordinator. “A sense of community is always important and when we can have our students learn and train close to home, they get the advantage of a familiar setting.”
The Personal Support Worker: Acute Care program gives students the tools they need to provide care and support to clients and their families. Providing care in physical, mental, community or personal health services, this program teaches students to assist people to function as independently as possible.
Elsipogtog is one of two Aboriginal communities offering NBCC programs this year. St. Mary’s First Nation is offering the Practical Nurse program. A total of 16 students are enrolled.
NBCC is a college network that serves students from across the province with six New Brunswick campuses, and offers over 90 programs.
