Learning happens inside and outside the classroom. Our Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition (PLAR) process gives you the opportunity to get credit for what you already know. It’s a service that allows you to receive formal recognition for a course of study, by taking into account the skills you already have under your belt.
Frequently asked questionsHow does PLAR work?PLAR allows you to receive formal NBCC recognition from courses and programs you’ve already taken at other post secondary institutions. In this case, we determine whether or not you can transfer credits. PLAR also takes into account your work experience, by formally assessing the knowledge and skills you already possess.
Is PLAR for me?PLAR is available to current full-time or part-time students, or to anyone applying to an NBCC program.
Why should I use the service?PLAR may help you get your diploma or certificate from NBCC faster by minimizing the number of courses you need to take. That could mean a lighter course load, giving you more free time or opportunities to explore other courses.
How many credits can be transferred? The number of recognized credits depends on whether or not NBCC can establish a relationship between your previous formal training and the training we provide.
When can I request the service?Start early. If you apply to NBCC and feel you have knowledge and skills in available courses for the program of your choice, start the recognition process. All requests for credit transfer must be submitted before the beginning of the NBCC course for which you are requesting recognition.
Who can help me?You can contact NBCC’s Student Success Centre at the NBCC location nearest you to receive more information about PLAR: Fredericton, Miramichi, Moncton, Saint John, St. Andrews and Woodstock.
Is PLAR free? There is no fee for registered NBCC students looking to transfer credits. A base rate of $50 for a course, a module, or a group of units of instruction applies to those who are not NBCC students. Additional fees may apply. Please contact Student Services at the location nearest you for more information: Fredericton, Miramichi, Moncton, Saint John, St. Andrews and Woodstock.
What information should I provide?A representative from the Student Services will let you know what to provide for evaluation. It will be up to you to demonstrate your abilities and skills for formal recognition.
How does the evaluation process work? In the case of experiential learning, you could be asked to demonstrate that you possess the necessary competencies. A representative from the Student Success Centre will explain the process.
