Small Vessel Operator Proficiency (SVOP)

Course Objectives

To provide course participants with a basic understanding of the hazards associated with the marine environment and their own vessel and the prevention of shipboard incidents; the knowledge and skills necessary to safely operate a small non-pleasure vessel in near coastal and sheltered waters under normal operation conditions, including darkness and restricted visibility; additional knowledge on aids to navigation and seamanship to supplement individual experience.

Areas of Study: Introduction, Terminology, Vessel hull types and configurations, Vessel safety and maritime law, Seamanship, Anchors and anchoring, Collision Regulations, Navigation lights, Stability, Safety on the job, Marine weather, Departure preparation, Bouys and markers, Navigation, Positioning equipment and installations,l Power vessel operations, Maintenance and storage, Search and rescue resources, Quick reference checklists. As per approval from Transport Canada, Marine Safety Branch, Ottawa.
