Program Description Do you have a strong desire to help other people, sometimes under challenging circumstances, but with great rewards? This is the program for you. This program provides students with the necessary knowledge and skills to care for individuals with long-term functional disabilities, who require help to live as independently and autonomously as possible. Students will be required to work with a team of health-care professionals. Each member of the team recognizes the importance of respecting the dignity of each individual. The concept of normalization for individuals of all ages is an important aspect of the program. The individual who chooses this profession should demonstrate optimal health, physical fitness, stamina and motivation. Graduates may be employed in hospitals, senior citizen and/or special homes, or private residences.

Specific Considerations:
The nature of this profession requires a sincere desire to work with and help other people, at times under challenging circumstances. The individual who chooses this profession should demonstrate optimal health, physical fitness, stamina and motivation. Students are responsible for transportation to and from clinical settings, and may be required to work shifts as well as an occasional weekend. Students must provide one pair of white sneakers/duty shoes and their own uniform.
Admission Requirements
Persons seeking admission to this training should:
• Posess a High School Diploma, Adult High School Diploma, or GED Diploma
•Proof of a physical examination and immunization prior to the commencement of training by following instructions on the standard NBCC medical form
•Satisfactory criminal record check using the Canadian Police Information Centre
Duration This Personal Support Worker - Acute Care program is 30 weeks long, and begins in September.
