Program DescriptionThis program is designed to prepare students for employment as educators and caregivers for children from birth to age 12. Emphasis is placed on fostering all areas of developments within a holistic education program. Early Childhood education combines classroom study with field practicum designed to give students an opportunity to work as early childhood educators with different age groups, and in a variety of child care environments.
Graduates may find employment in child care centres, pre-school programs, early intervention programs, as Teacher Assistants in schools, after-school programs and other related facilities involved in the care, education and development of young children. Graduates may also pursue a Bachelor of Professional Arts in Human Services by distance from Athabasca University.

Specific Considerations:
To be successful in this field, students must enjoy working with children and fostering their cognitive, physical, social and emotional development. They should enjoy actively participating in children's activities with a high energy level, and in good physical and psychological health. Other essential traits include: being organized, caring, flexible, reliable, observant and patient.
Admission RequirementsPersons seeking admission to this training should:
•Posess a High School Diploma, Adult High School Diploma, or GED Diploma
•Proof of a physical examination and immunization prior to the commencement of training by following instructions on the standard NBCC medical form
•Satisfactory criminal record check using the Canadian Police Information Centre
Duration This Early Childhood Education Program is 40 weeks long, and begins in September.
