Program DescriptionThis training service is designed to develop the knowledge and awareness of forest sector workers. Participants learn the 8 criteria identified in the Sustainable Forestry Initiative standard and are able to implement the operational requirements developed by the NB SFI NB Implementation Committee.
Topics include:
- Nine principles of sustainable forestry that are outlined by the SFI Standard Implementation Committee;
- Soil and water Best Management Practices for New Brunswick forest operations;
- Benefits of ensuring adequate regeneration (forest resource conservation);
- Endangered Species Act and the Canadian Species at Risk Act that protect wildlife habitat and endangered plants and animals;
- Occupational Health and Safety Act and its Regulations which apply to forest workers;
- Operational responsibilities related to the Transportation of Primary Forest Products Act which apply to truckers;
- Methods to improve productivity and efficiency for forest workers;
- NB government departments with responsibility to forests and the environment.
Admission RequirementsPersons seeking admission to this training should:
- High School diploma OR GED
- OR be an adult student at least 21 years of age
- Previous forestry experience would be an asset, but not required;
- Participating forest workers are selected by the company or contractor for whom they work.
